Hey!
I’m Kat Phul.
It’s nice to meet you!
Storytelling is, at its core, the defining essence of humanity.
Our earliest ancestors took the time to traverse hidden caverns to leave their physical mark on the world and share in their sacred legends.
Art and prose are an innate part of what it means to be a living, breathing person - to witness a story being told is to be connected to ourselves and our past and present world.
I’ve been writing and creating art for as long as I can remember. Ever since I was young, I enjoyed creating stories of my own and sharing them with others.
As I’ve grown, I’ve realized I still hold that same passion and want nothing more than to spend my life creating stories, either through the written word, the creation of art, or dramatic retellings with staged plays, and then sharing them with the world around me.
My formal and informal experience comes from many places.
I am currently enrolled as a student at the University of Alberta in their Bachelor of Arts degree program, where I am double-majoring in fine art & design and psychology, and double-minoring in creative writing and drama.
I have four years of playwriting experience from the Citadel Theatre’s Young Playwrighting Company, where I learned to hone my craft as a playwright.
I also have various realms of expertise within the Edmonton arts community, including workshopping scripts and volunteering for theatre shows. And I have won awards and participated in workshops for my original plays in various competitions.
I am currently working as a freelance artist and illustrator, while also working on building my future career as a writer, author, and playwright.
My end goal is to become an art therapist, helping others process their trauma through creative exploration. I also aim to continue working creatively in fine art, creative writing, theatre, and beyond, following wherever the road may lead me.
I am based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada,
where I live in a multigenerational household with my Punjabi-Canadian husband, Paul, and his two parents, and our beloved cat, Lilo.
I enjoy spending my free time exploring Edmonton by walking its river valley or attending its many festivals, concerts, or theatre events.
My hobbies include reading, writing, making art, journaling, and enjoying hot milky tea on chilly, rainy days.
I am also a spoonie - a cute name for a person living with chronic illness and disability - and a triple-negative breast cancer survivor and advocate.
