Publishing: Elephants and Tea - Round Two!
On June 1, 2025, I had my second piece of work published, marking my first time being published in a physical magazine or media outlet. Elephants and Tea is the world’s only young adult cancer magazine and is known for sharing stories of those living with cancer, from survivors and caregivers. My piece titled Collide retells the first few months of my recovery and how I was pulled between versions of my past self and who I was being forced to become. The story itself was born in my university creative nonfiction class that I took in the fall semester of 2024 at the University of Alberta. I was fortunate enough to have had a few drafts carefully guided and critiqued by my peers, as well as by my phenomenal professor, Dr. Jennifer Quist. After submitting my story to Elephants and Tea, I received an email stating that it was accepted for publication and that I was also awarded the honour of reading my story live at their magazine launch in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Additionally, I was awarded a scholarship to cover expenses. The immediate answer was an obvious yes, but unfortunately, due to the political climate in America at the time, I was forced to decline later. Instead, I celebrated the launch of my first physical publication quietly from my home in Canada with my loved ones and my cat. The nonfiction story was shared on Elephants and Tea’s website, social media and in their email newsletter.
